The morning of this third day of tour in Emilia Romagna is dedicated to the historic Reggio hills, the noble lands closely tied to the figure of the Grand Countess of the Middle Ages: Matilde di Canossa, a prominent leading figure of both our lands and the international stage. Here you will enjoy a visit and tasting at a wonderful estate producing Traditional Balsamic Vinegar of Reggio Emilia PDO, the elixir aged for at least twelve years in wooden barrels.
Afterward, you will move to the historic center of Modena. Here you will stroll among monuments and squares declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, breathing in the aristocratic atmosphere of the Estense city. For lunch, a stop at the historic Albinelli Market is an absolute must.
In the afternoon the journey will culminate with admission to the prestigious Ferrari Museum in Maranello: a total, captivating immersion into the universe of legendary sports cars, where the history of the Prancing Horse (the “Rosse”) and the innovation of the future merge into a uniquely thrilling experience.
2. Parmigiano Reggiano PDO, Traditional Balsamic Vinegar PDO and Reggio Emilia
The day begins with an exclusive visit to a local producer of Parmigiano-Reggiano PDO, a must do for a tour in Emilia Romagna. Known as “the King of Cheeses,” Parmigiano-Reggiano is still made today using the exact same artisanal method from eight centuries ago. First, watching the expert master cheesemaker (casaro) at work, you will discover why this cheese is considered a masterpiece of Italian cuisine and the undisputed star of the Food Valley. Then, after a guided tasting of different maturations, it will be time to discover its ultimate pairing: Traditional Balsamic Vinegar of Reggio Emilia PDO.
You will visit a traditional vinegar cellar (acetaia) nestled in the Reggio hills. Following the tour, you will discover the authentic flavor of this unique elixir which ages for at least twelve years in wooden barrels.
In the afternoon you will enjoy a guided walk tour of the historic center of Reggio Emilia, where, in 1797, the Tricolore, destined to become the Italian national flag, was born. The tour will lead you through the streets and squares of the city center, uncovering the landmarks and fascinating stories of Reggio Emilia. Today, the city is internationally renowned not only for its gastronomy, hard work, and high quality of life, but also for having the best early childhood education system in the world.
